The port city of Almería in Andalusía serves as a point of entry for many undocumented immigrants who cross the Mediterranean seeking a different life on a continent unknown to them. Instead of focusing on the new arrivals of illegal immigrants at the docks in Almería I have turned the lens onto three families at different stages of assimilation. I focus on their everyday life and seek to show how everyday moments can build identity.
This body of work became a photo installation on the issue of immigrant identity across Spain and the U.S. It received international press, and principal placement at the 2014 FOTOWEEK DC in the Spanish Embassy; the only piece to be dedicated an entire room in the venue. More than 5,000 attended the exhibit, and 26 news outlets from around the world featured reviews of the work online.
